EECP Patient Registry

International EECP patient registry (IEPR)

In 1998, the international EECP patient registry (IEPR) was established to document patient characteristics for those undergoing EECP therapy, the safety and efficient of EECP therapy and the therapy’s long term outcomes in the broader population. As of February 5th 2002, 5000 patients had been enrolled in the registry. An analysis of long-term outcomes suggests that the clinical benefits achieved are sustained up to three years following an initial course of treatment. Other patient follow up studies suggest that the benefits of EECP persist for up to 5 years.

Objective evidence of EECP for refractory angina

  • Increase in exercise duration
  • Increase time to exercise induced ST- segment depression
  • Improves stress induced myocardial ischemia using radio nuclide perfusion tread mill stress test (RPST)
  • Improves perfusion assessed by positron emission tomography (PET)
  • Increase cardiac output
  • Increase vascular growth factors like VEGF, HGF, & BFGF
  • Improvement in ejection fraction
  • Decrease in heart rate

Objective evidence of EECP for congestive heart failure

  • Increase in peak oxygen uptake
  • Improvement in preload-adjusted maximal power.
  • Improvement in ejection fraction
  • Improved diastolic filling pressure associated with decrease Brain Natriuretic peptide (BNP)
  • Trend towards Normalization of Neurohormonal activation is noted. Increase in nitric oxide and decrease in endothelin.
  • Increase renal perfusion decreases plasma rennin activity.
  • Decrease rennin-angiotensin system axis activation.
