How IPC Helps Reduce Cholesterol

IPC’s Cholesterol Reversal Program offers a holistic solution for lowering cholesterol in people with high cholesterol. The Cholesterol Reversal Programme involves detailed medical testing, investigations of medical history, family history, genetic factors and lifestyle habits, nutritional counseling and diet planning, yoga and meditation, stress counseling, exercise planning and guided exercise programs, medications including Allopathic and Ayurvedic (Optional), etc.

How IPC’s Cholesterol Reversal Program Works to Reduce Cholesterol

IPC Heart Care’s Cholesterol Reversal Programme involves the following aspects for reversal of high cholesterol and cholesterol management:

  • Detailed Medical Testing: The severity of cholesterol and the problems associated with it vary from person to person. IPC carries out various medical tests to get a complete perspective of the patient’s health and the contributing factors. This includes treadmill test (stress test) and various blood tests. This helps to determine all the areas that need to be tackled while devising the cholesterol treatment program, and the ideal milestones as far as exercise goes.

  • Getting to the Root Cause of High Cholesterol in the Patient: Our doctors and counselors investigate various aspects that could be contributing to high cholesterol, like life stresses, personality traits, food habits, genetic factors, erratic lifestyle or work schedules, etc. Once the root causes are identified, the individualized cholesterol treatment programme can be formulated according to the individual’s requirements.

  • Nutritional Counseling & Diet Planning: IPC has professional dieticians who are trained and experienced with helping patients with cholesterol management and reversal.

  • Exercise Planning and Guidance: Remember that only 20% of the body’s cholesterol comes from food, so, although diet is extremely important, it must go hand-in-hand with other aspects like exercise. The exercise program set for you will depend on your overall health, resting heart rate, maximum heart rate, etc. It cannot be emphasised enough how important exercise is for treating and reducing cholesterol levels in the body. This is especially true for cardiovascular exercise. Just simple walking at the optimal level for your body shows tremendous results. For heart patients, all exercise is carried out under strict monitoring and professional supervision.

  • Stress Management Counselling: Cholesterol has a very strong connection with stress. IPC has professional stress management counsellors who are always happy to help patients get a perspective on their problems, so they can deal with the stresses of their lives as well as possible. Stress management should always be an integral part of any cholesterol treatment plan.

  • Yoga and Meditation: Yoga and meditation is probably one of the biggest gifts that India has given to the world. IPC has trained yoga and meditation professionals who teach you general yoga and yoga exercises that are specifically beneficial for cholesterol and heart ailments, as well as breathing, meditation and relaxation techniques.

  • Alpha Thinking Program: IPC Heart Care’s ‘Alpha Thinking Program’ has proven tremendously beneficial to our patients in the treatment of cholesterol and other stress-related ailments, including heart disease. Here, you are taught how to train your mind to make a habit of positive imagery.

  • Medication including Allopathic and Ayurvedic (Optional): Since cholesterol can lead to dangerous complications, you must take all medication prescribed by your doctor. Our cardiologists at IPC may also prescribe or oversee your medication. IPC also has Ayurvedic doctors on its team. Ayurveda is an ancient Indian natural system of medicine that employs plants and herbs with curative properties. If you so choose, you can seek a consultation with one of our Ayurvedic doctors, who will first study your complete constitution, and then recommend natural remedies for you. As your cholesterol starts to reduce, you can reduce the dose of your allopathic medication, and eventually even stop it completely. Ayurveda has met with a lot of success in the treatment of high cholesterol.

Sometimes, when high cholesterol is accompanied by heart diseases like atherosclerosis, blocked arteries, or poor circulation, treatments like Arterial Clearance Therapy (ACT)/ Chelation Therapy &/ or Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) may also be recommended along with the cholesterol reversal program. After proper risk assessment is undertaken, these treatments may be initiated for some patients who have or are at high risk of heart disease.

IPC’s comprehensive approach which tackles every aspect of high cholesterol at its root, has received laurels from patients and the medical community alike for helping so many reduce their cholesterol levels.

UNDERSTANDING CHOLESTEROL

What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance naturally found in the body of all human beings and animals. Cholesterol is necessary for hormone production, cell metabolism, and other vital body processes. Cholesterol found in the blood can be broadly classified into 2 types –  High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL). While having high levels of LDL cholesterol is considered bad, it is beneficial to have high levels of HDL cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is therefore commonly referred to as “good cholesterol”. While high levels of serum LDL (“bad cholesterol”) has a damaging effect on the arteries and the heart, high levels of serum HDL have a protective effect.

How Is Cholesterol Formed?

80% of the cholesterol found in the body is produced by the body itself. It is synthesized by the liver. The remaining 20% comes from the diet.

What Causes High Cholesterol?
Some causes of high cholesterol include:

  • Genetic predisposition is a significant cause of cholesterol
  • Stress, anxiety, depression are the main causes of high cholesterol in many cases
  • A Diet rich in fat tends to cause high serum cholesterol levels
  • Age tends to be an important contributing factor for high cholesterol
  • Sedentary lifestyle often leads to high cholesterol levels
  • Erratic lifestyle like irregular eating and sleeping patterns is a significant cause of cholesterol

What Are the Dangers / Complications of Cholesterol?

An excess of cholesterol in the bloodstream causes plaque to build up in the arteries, including in the coronary arteries, the carotid arteries that lead to the brain, and the arteries that supply blood to the legs. This causes narrowing and blockage of the affected arteries, producing signs and symptoms originating from the particular part of the body that has decreased blood supply.

Some complications of cholesterol include:

  • Angina
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke; Paralysis
  • Brain Haemorrhage
  • Aneurysm – brain aneurysms, aortic aneurysms, etc
  • High Blood Pressure / Hypertension
  • Pancreatitis
